Students in the Margins
Big Ideas:
We all have things we're good at and things that challenge us. Some people can paint beautiful pictures, some sing with perfect pitch and some can run at speeds that seem impossible. But most of us, fall somewhere along a continuum of these skills. Take singing for example. A few of us will become the next American Idol star, some of us will sign with a local choir, some of us are best suited to become shower singers, and some of us...well, lets just say ....our children BEG us not to sing "Happy Birthday".
The same is true for learning. In every class we teach some students will excel, some will get by fine and some will struggle with one or more aspects of the curriculum.

Barriers and Solutions
In order to help all students learn and participate in the general education curriculum we need to develop a greater understanding of both the barriers that exist in educational goals, methods, materials, and assessments and the flexible strategies that exist to meet the diverse needs of students.
The purpose of the Barriers and Solutions Sheet is two-fold: to help educators identify the ways in which traditional instruction often includes barriers to leaning and ways to make learning more accessible and effective for all students.
